This was a project that I independently led and found a solution for. On our devices with LED flashlights, we had added the ability to double tap to turn the light on and off, but it provided no additional controls. While looking for feedback on another project, I discovered that a handful of our users wanted a quick way to access those controls without opening the flashlight app. Adding some additional functionality was surprisingly very controversial among Stakeholders. As a result, I met several times with them to collect their thoughts and opinions on the customer feedback I had gathered. I pitched some ideas targeting very specific user groups in hopes that we could test the feature out on some lower-stakes products. My two user personas ended up being divers with MK3 devices who needed to access flashlight controls without covering their dive data, and tactical users with Tactix devices who needed to flip between red and white light during missions. After implementing this feature on MK3 and Tactix, we won over the rest of the stakeholders and put it on all LED light products. So far, it has been met with extremely positive reviews from our wearable customers, with testers stating it’s one of their favorite new features.
